Mobilizing shelf space to increase customer satisfaction

With the New Year, it’s time for small businesses to take inventory of current shelf space. No, not actual shelf space inside a store, but your “mobile” shelf space.

Traditionally, this space was thought to be where the eye hits the product on the shelf or the in-store display, and where the consumer makes their first connection with a brand. Although this retail “real estate” will always be important, the growth of mobile commerce is proving its place in product marketing.

A new report shows that mobile payment transactions have increased 27% and now account for 17.5% of all digital purchases worldwide, according to the Adyen Global Mobile Payment Index. This shift emphasizes why keeping your mobile audience top of mind is crucial.

As consumers join the mobile revolution, the point of interaction for brands needs to evolve as well. What questions should you be asking yourself as you shift your focus to a mobile audience? Here are three key considerations as you assess your shelf space for the New Year:

1)      The past is your present –There are several web analytics services able to provide robust traffic metrics that can prove beneficial when designing your mobile shelf space. Where is your traffic coming from? Designing with that as a top priority will ensure you are building a site with the user in mind.

2)      Less is more – Simplistic designs for mobile devices sets the landscape for an easy to navigate customer experience. For on-the-go customers, poor Wi-Fi or a low signal can slow load times frustrating the customer and making them exit your site or mobile app too quickly. Prioritize which files are important – are there unnecessary large-size files keeping your customers from staying in your mobile environment?

3)      Put it to the test – Before you launch your mobile site or app, test the design on all types of devices, from a tablet to a smart phone, to ensure your customer experiences a positive and consistent interaction with your brand.  If you don’t have access to varying devices, a great way to test your site is to install an online mobile phone simulator. It’s an easy and free way to ensure your site is optimized for all mobile users.
